Introduction to Penang

George Town, the capital of Penang, was accorded the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List of Cities and Sites for "its outstanding universal values" July in 2008. "Culture heritage" travellers can explore the fascinating historical and heritage sites and experience the diverse cultures that exist here. Long regarded as the food haven in Malaysia, Penang continues to entice visitors with its scrumptious cuisines.

On the medical front, Malaysia is ranked among the top choices in the region in terms of low cost, high quality medical services and facilities with Penang being the leading medical tourism centre of Malaysia.

Useful Information for Travellers

Penang International Airport is the main gateway for air passengers.

Daily flights are available on Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) to Penang. Singapore Airlines and Tiger Airways have a direct flight from Singapore.

On arrival at Penang Airport, you will need to go to the taxi counter to purchase a coupon if you have not arranged for transport in advance.

All visitors to Malaysia must have a valid passport and visa. Participants should obtain appropriate entry visas to Malaysia from the diplomatic or consular mission of the Government of Malaysia at their point of origin or en route to Malaysia. Participants are advised to consult with Malaysian Embassy or consular mission regarding visa requirements or visit the website:

Climate

Tropical climate with warm weather all year round. Temperatures in Northern Malaysia range from 28ºC to 32ºC . Rainy days can be expected around June to August. Casual cotton wear would be best suitable for outdoor activities.

Penang is not only a popular tourist destination in Malaysia; it’s also a food paradise that offers unique cuisines that originates from its diversified multi-cultural society.

Language

As a place with multi-ethnic population, Penang languages/dialects comprise of English, Malay, Mandarin, Penang Hokkien, Teochew, Tamil & more. The language used at the event will be English.

Malaysian time is 8 hours ahead of GMT.

Voltage is 220 - 240 volts AC at 50 cycles per second. Standard 3-pin square plugs and sockets.

Currency & Foreign Exchange

The unit of currency is Malaysian Ringgit indicated as RM. USD1 is currently equivalent to RM3.12 but will vary from day to day. Foreign currency can be converted at banks and money changers that are available at the Airport and City area.

Banks and Banking Hours

  • Banking hours are Mon - Fri: 9.30am to 4.30pm. Sat & Sun: Closed.
  • Automated Teller Machines (ATM) are available at airport terminals, shopping centres and commercial places.

Travel & Medical Insurance

Travel and medical insurance are not covered by the Conference. Delegates are advised to obtain the necessary insurance prior to coming to Malaysia.

Smoking is restricted to designated smoking areas only.
